Mengalah tidak bererti kalah…

Posted by anakkawi on December 31, 2007

Tapi, bila kena tegur, terus tak mahu bertegur-sapa, menjenguk kerana terpaksa, layanan ala-ala (ala kadar) saja.

Mengapa?

Kos khidmat PTPTN mesti terperinci

Stem cell discovery ‘like turning lead into gold’

IT was the kind of breakthrough scientists had dreamed of for decades and its promise to help cure disease appears to be fast on the way to being realised.

Researchers last month announced they were able to turn the clock back on skin cells and transform them into stem cells, the mutable building blocks of organs and tissues.

Then earlier this month, a different team announced it had cured sickle cell anaemia in mice using stem cells derived from adult mouse skin.

“This is truly the Holy Grail: to be able to take a few cells from a patient — say a cheek swab or few skin cells — and turn them into stem cells in the laboratory,” said Robert Lanza, a stem cell pioneer at Advanced Cell Technology.

Finding her heart – and getting a divorce

Naomi Wolf tells Sarah Baxter how her father’s influence helped when her life reached a crossroads

The Treehouse is Naomi Wolf’s first book about a man rather than the sisterhood and it is a love story in its way. I ask her if it has been hard to find men who live up to her dad. She looks at me in amazement and bursts out laughing. “No. I’ve had plenty of men who I adore — appropriately.”Attracting men has not been a problem for Wolf, with her sparkling eyes, mane of brown hair and ready smile. They were sometimes the wrong sort but there is adventure in that. Then came the years of seemingly blissful marriage to David Shipley, an editor at The New York Times and father of their two children.

She was surely the luckiest feminist, people said enviously, just as they had when she published The Beauty Myth in her glamorous twenties. Their marriage is over, though, and they are in the process of divorcing.

“It is truly nobody’s fault,” she says. “We had a wonderful 10 to 12 years. It is really sad, but everything is working out as expected.”

The Beauty Myth is still relevant

Thinking females in their forties will be aware of Naomi Wolf. Back in 1986, when shoulders were padded and lipstick was bright red, she produced a very good book called The Beauty Myth, which identified the many ways in which women were crimping, cutting, dyeing and starving themselves to fit a tyrannical notion of beauty. Feminism was in eclipse, according to Wolf, because women were too busy agonising about their big bums to worry about empowerment. Society, as a whole, was using the myth of Beauty to keep the sisters under control.

Twenty years on, The Beauty Myth is still relevant (if you doubt it, look at the depressing numbers of girls who think happiness lies in new breasts). Wolf, however, seems to have run out of meaningful things to say to anyone who is not a monied, middle-class American liberal. Her latest outpouring is a good example of what happens to someone who believes she has a message for the planet, and hasn’t yet twigged that nobody gives a hoot.

Myth busting

Interim management is about recycling rejects. This is the original interim myth, says Bill Penney, a founding partner of Ashton Penney, the interim agency. It began because many of the first interims felt the calling after being made redundant or retiring early; today, however, interims are “a cadre of experts with a huge amount of experience”.

Interims are simply jumped-up temps. Tony Draper, an interim manager who was placed at Kent County Council recently by Rockpools, says: “We’re not temps but a lot of people think we are. We can do all sorts of things, from filling in for a chief executive through to special projects.”

Questions about sex

Posted by anakkawi on December 31, 2007

Mitchell Symons, author of Where Do Nudists Keep Their Hankies, has the answer to all sorts of saucy secrets. Read his funny explanations for three questions of sex here

Why do men fall asleep after sex?

Well, I do. Don’t all men? Why? Presumably because we have sex last thing at night. Also, as men, we’re task-orientated: job done, lets move on to the next one, which, after a good fart, is going to sleep. The cuddle can wait for another day.

Having said that, it is undoubtedly true that sex – accompanied or solo – does make you sleepy.

Is there a cause and effect?
